The number that actually matters is roll speed
Green speed is measured on a stimp meter, and it is the difference between practice that transfers to the course and practice that does not. Slow surfaces make every putt feel like it needs a hit, which builds a stroke that runs everything four feet past the hole on a real green. Faster surfaces punish a stroke that decelerates, which is the whole point of practicing.
Shorter pile rolls faster. Longer pile is more forgiving, and more forgiving is usually not what you want out of a practice surface.
Size it for the putts you actually miss
Nobody misses from thirty feet and blames the green. The putts that cost you are inside ten, so a green that gives you a true eight to ten foot roll does most of the work. Longer greens are worth it for lag practice and for the room to feel like a room, not because the short putts get better.
Measure before you shop, and account for where you stand. You need room behind the longest putt to take a stroke.
What goes underneath
On concrete, a green laid straight down feels dead and rolls unevenly wherever the slab is not flat. A foam subfloor fixes both. In a simulator bay it also builds the floor to a height where a stand-on hitting mat sits flush with the surface around it instead of sitting proud of it like a step.
Common questions
How much room do I need?
For a useful practice green, plan on ten to twelve feet of roll plus room to stand behind it. Smaller works for stroke drills but not for reading a putt.
Can I use one in a golf simulator bay?
Yes, and it is one of the best uses of the floor you already built. Turf by the roll is usually the right call there because it is cut to the bay rather than dropped into it.
Will it work outside?
Modular greens and roll turf both do. Most finished indoor greens are not built for weather and UV. Check the product page before you plan on leaving one outdoors.
Do I need infill?
Not for indoor use. Sand infill mostly matters outdoors for ballast and to hold the pile upright over a large area.
