Almost every simulator room that disappoints somebody was decided before a single part was ordered. Not by the launch monitor, not by the screen. By the room. Here is how to measure yours honestly, and what the numbers actually mean once you are standing in it with a driver.

If your room is 10 ft high, 14 ft wide and 18 ft deep, you can build essentially any simulator you want and never think about the room again. Below those numbers you are making trades, and the rest of this page is about which trades are fine and which ones you will regret.

Ceiling height is the one you cannot negotiate with
Width and depth have workarounds. Ceiling height does not. You either clear the club or you do not.
Ten feet is the number where a tall golfer swings a driver without thinking about it. At nine feet most people are fine and some are not, and the only way to know which you are is to stand in the room and take a full swing with your longest club. Do that before you buy anything. Not a half swing to be careful, a real one.
At eight feet you are building an iron room. That is a legitimate choice and plenty of people are happy with it, but go in knowing it rather than finding out in January.
The part people forget: your finished ceiling is not your ceiling. An overhead launch monitor and a projector both hang below it, and turf or a foam subfloor raises the floor underneath you. A 10 ft slab-to-joist measurement can finish closer to 9 ft once the room is actually built.
Width decides who gets to play
Fourteen feet lets you center the hitting position, which means a right-handed and a left-handed golfer can both play without moving the mat. If more than one person is using this room, that is the number.
Ten feet works if you offset the tee to one side and accept that the room is built for one-handedness. It is a real simulator and a lot of good rooms are built this way. It is just a decision, and it is easier to make now than after the screen is framed.
Whatever the width, you want clearance either side of the screen for the framing and any wall padding. That is part of why a 14 ft room does not give you a 14 ft screen.
Depth is three measurements, not one
People measure depth as a single number and get surprised. It is really three, back to front:
- About 1 ft behind the screen. The screen hangs off the back wall, not against it. That cavity is what lets it take an impact instead of transmitting it into the wall.
- 10 to 12 ft from the screen to the ball. Less than 10 and you start getting bounceback, and the room feels like it is coming at you.
- 7 ft behind the ball. This is your swing and your follow through. It is the piece that gets squeezed when a room is short, and it is the piece you feel every single session.
Add those up and you get 18 ft, which is why that is the recommendation. Fifteen feet is the honest floor: 1 behind the screen, 10 to the ball, 4 behind it. It works. It is tighter than you think it will be.
Your screen is whatever the room leaves you
Screen size is decided by the room, not the other way around. Once you take the framing and the side clearance out of your wall, the screen is whatever is left, and that number is almost always smaller than people expect. A 14 ft wall does not give you a 14 ft screen.
The other half of it is shape. A 4:3 screen is taller for the same width, which suits a room with ceiling to spare and gives you more of the ball flight up top. A 16:9 screen is wider and shorter, which is what you want when the ceiling is the thing you are fighting. Same wall, two different screens, and the right answer depends on the room you actually have.

Where your launch monitor sits changes the room
This is the part most measuring guides skip, and it is the one that most often forces a redesign. Launch monitors do not all want the same room.
- Overhead camera units mount to the ceiling in front of or above the golfer. They need real ceiling height, and they hang down into it. If your ceiling is marginal, this category is where it bites.
- Floor-standing camera units sit beside the ball. They are the friendliest to a low ceiling, which is why they end up in a lot of basements.
- Radar units read the ball from behind, and they need room behind you to do it. In a shallow room, a radar is the wrong tool no matter how good it is.
Pick the room first, then the launch monitor that suits it. Doing it the other way around is how people end up with a great device they cannot mount properly.

Small rooms, garages and basements
Most of the rooms we build are not the ideal 10 by 14 by 18. They are basements with a soffit in the wrong place, garages with a door track, spare rooms that are 2 ft short somewhere. Those rooms work. They just need to be planned rather than assumed.
Things that save a tight room: offsetting the tee, choosing a floor-standing launch monitor, a short throw projector, and building the screen to the room rather than buying a stock size that nearly fits.
Things that do not: hoping. If you are within a foot of a limit in any direction, measure twice and talk to somebody before you frame.
Commercial bays
Commercial is the same math with less tolerance. Ten foot ceilings minimum, 14 ft or wider per bay so anybody who walks in can play, and 7 ft behind the golfer as a safety number rather than a comfort one. Plan the wear too: the walls beside a public bay take a beating that a home room never sees.

Common questions
What size room do I need for a golf simulator?
Ten feet high, 14 ft wide, 18 ft deep is the room where nothing is a compromise. Fifteen feet deep by 10 wide with a 9 ft ceiling is the honest minimum for a full swing.
Can I put a simulator in an 8 ft basement?
Yes, with irons and wedges, and it is a genuinely useful practice space. Full driver swings are unlikely to clear. Test it with your own swing before you commit.
How far should I stand from the screen?
Ten to twelve feet from the ball to the screen. Closer than ten and bounceback becomes the thing you notice most.
Does a garage work?
Often better than a basement, because garages tend to be wider and taller. Watch the door track, and plan for heat and cold since a garage swings further than a finished room.
Do I need the room finished before I order?
No, and it is usually better if you have not. The electrical, the framing and the screen position are all easier to get right before the walls close.
